Let it Sew, Let it Sew, Let it Sew!

The festive period is upon us and there’s no better time to cosy up and get crafting. So, why not make Christmas extra special this year with some handmade Christmas decorations and get creative with your wrapping?

It’s not as hard as it sounds to start making your own decorations! There are so many little crafts that you can do using cut off and remnants from other projects, we have a whole host of remnant fabrics in our haberdashery that get us inspired. Here are a few of our ideas this festive season.

Ribbons are a beautiful and classy way to jazz up your Christmas wrapping. Keep it simple just by tying a bow around the gift, or pair the ribbon with some twine and accents like pine cones and sprigs of Christmas tree for something extra special. You can even use your cut offs to decorate any festive wreaths you have!

There are so many different baubles that you can make for your Christmas tree, but even just swapping out the string on your existing baubles to ribbons adds a bit more style to your decorations. Christmas gnomes are growing in popularity so you could make your own mini versions for the tree! This PomPom Gnome tutorial is super simple to follow, and you only need a few things. You could even try something similar to make Christmas puddings or little reindeer.

A super simple way to spruce up your living space and add instant style to your curtains at Christmas is by simply threading some left over ribbon through the loops of a few of your favourite baubles and tying them around your curtains or tiebacks. You could even do something similar for napkin rings!

Make your Christmas as bright as a button!

One of our favourite, and easy, ways to add custom flourishes to your presents is to add buttons. We have picked out a selection of a few simple but of so effective ways to add buttons to your gift wrapping.

Gift Wrap Baubles

We love this cute Christmas bauble idea to jazz up gift tags. All you need is craft paper tags and a selection of Christmas-coloured buttons, glue and a pen. We love the red and green theme paired with the ‘Grinch’ style Merry Christmas font, but you can choose any colour combination. Why not theme the colours to your wrapping paper, or even your tree decorations?

Snowflake Tree Decoration

For more experienced crafters, this snowflake tree ornament would make a statement on any tree. For a chic look stick to one colour button, or if you have been bitten by the maximalism bug you could mix and match bright coloured buttons.

Ho Ho Ho Card

Who doesn’t love a home made Christmas card? This button craft is super simple but creates a quirky card that will stand out on the mantlepiece. We love the irregular buttons in this design and is a great way to reuse any loose buttons.

Will you be trying any of these button crafts this Christmas? If you do, we would love to see them so don’t forget to tag us when you post on Instagram.

If you want to get crafting this Christmas but don’t know where to start or would like to get children involved, we have a range of fun craft kits that includes everything you need. Some of our favourite craft kits for the festive season include woollen broaches, Christmas decoration sewing kits, and Christmas character felting kits, which are available to buy in our shop!

There’s always something new in our Haberdashery Department, so come in and browse through our expanding range with everything from wool and sewing threads to buttons, ribbons and zips in almost every shade under the sun.
